Even the happiest, most optimistic people have times when they are feeling down. Others have made being depressed and finding the worst in every situation a way of life. But how do you tell if your “case of the blues” is really something that you should be concerned about?
Clinical depression is a condition that, depending on its severity, can either be treated at home or may need outside help. Most health insurance plans, such as Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina, cover mental health services. Many situations can affect our moods and our feelings of self worth. Sometimes, depression is caused because of a situation that we find ourselves in. People who find themselves “housebound” either because of seasonal weather conditions or because they are caring for a loved one or children may find that their sense of “self” becomes lost along the way.
If the feelings of depression do not include any suicidal thoughts and are not, for the most part, interfering with conducting most of your daily responsibilities, then you may want to try these home remedies.
Increase both your mental and physical activity on a daily basis. This alone can exceed what most anti-depression drugs can do without any of those terrible side effects such as weight gain, a feeling of detachment and decrease in libido. Stay socially involved with others. Too much time alone or spent with small children can empty our social tanks very quickly. Go to the park or mall to visit with other parents, join local community or church groups or even take an inexpensive community college class on something you’ve always wanted to try like underwater basket weaving!
