Cake Recipes – The Early Beginnings

The earliest cake recipes are around the 13th century, however, the origin of cakes is much older. Some historians trace cake back as far as the Stone Age. In early human history cakes were made of crushed grains moistened with water and baked on a hot stone which were found among the remains in ancient caves around Swiss lake villages. This kind of unleavened cake was really much more like bread and was the precursor of all modern European baked products. The closest thing to those early ‘cakes’ today are oatcakes, which are flat and unleavened – but continue to retain the word ‘cake’ in the name. For many generations there has been no real difference between cake and bread although the term cake has been used for smaller breads. Learn more about cake recipes.
