What is “fire rating” all about?
Many people have never heard of the term “fire rating” — but it is an exceedingly important phrase, and an even more important process. This refers to special treatments that are applied to the structural steel which is used in the construction of apartment buildings, office complexes and other large structures. The purpose of treating the steel in this way is that the material applied will protect the steel from getting too hot, too quickly, in the event that a fire breaks out in the building. When structural steel has been properly prepared in this manner, the building will be much more structurally sound and safe in the case of a fire emergency.
