What Is Rock Climbing Exactly?

The recreational sport of rock climbing is the art and science of ascending steep grades and altitudes using tactical skills in hand and footwork for unassisted climbing. Although there is a lifeline by which the climber is connected, the rope is merely used as a fail safe should the climber lose their grip; the life line is not actually used to assist the climber in any way. There are many different levels of difficulties by which the steepness of mountain slopes and corresponding level of difficulty are gaged. Through years of practice, climbers typically reach a level of competence that allows them to climb even the most difficult rock walls, unassisted.
