911 Dispatcher
I work as a police dispatcher at our local police station. When you call 911 in our town, most of the time I’m the one you will talk to. Recently, I had a friend ask how I can tell where a person is if they are using a cell phone. So I told her that our answering system uses hosted SUPL 1.0 assisted GPS service. Then, I explained to her that AGPS, or assisted global positioning systems, are able to locate where a cell phone is calling from, even if the cell service at that location is weak. She was a little weirded out that there is technology out there that can track cell phones, but got over it when I reminded her that it might save her life someday.
